ABOUT
Alex Johnson is a NYC based communication strategist, experience planner and filmmaker. She started her career within the commercial & music video world (including Radical Media, Partizan, Rose Hackney Barber) in London before moving on to head up online outreach & interactive initiatives at Sally Potter’s production company, Adventure Pictures.
Alongside devising tactics for low budget feature film promotion & cross-media project development for Endemol, Channel 4 & the ENO, she conceived The Sp-ark Project, a social learning/creative archive platform, currently being used at the University of London.
She then joined interactive marketing agency Deep Focus in LA as an Experience Planner (clients included New Line, Universal, HBO, Random House, Vitamin Water, Havaianas, Sundance Channel & The N) guiding thinking on audience insight, branding and strategic approach across Creative, Publicity & Media departments.
She has worked with Seize The Media on Myspace/Hammer project Beyond The Rave on real-time audience analysis for their online film release/social game; consulted for the IFP on the organization’s planned rebrand & interactive re-launch; advised filmmaker Lance Hammer on digital marketing initiatives for Ballast (best director, Sundance 08) and consulted on future-forward product development for Massify.
Alex is currently working with culture hacker/story architect Lance Weiler to expand the open source Workbook Project and is co-founder of its experimental labs division (an agency/think tank/project producer), WBP Labs. Its first project, RADAR a web/mobile series about storytelling and creativity, which she also produced and directed, is currently airing on Babelgum.
Speaking engagements include Open Knowledge Conference, Internet Week NYC, DIY Days LA, Filmmaker Forum & Power to the Pixel.
Alex is also co-founder of interactive theatre collective Me & Them and writes a brand, behavior & trends blog called Motive.
